Adrenal Medulla

The adrenal medulla is the inner region of the adrenal gland and a key component of the sympathetic nervous system, coordinating rapid responses to stress. When sympathetic nerve fibers release acetylcholine, chromaffin cells in the medulla secrete epinephrine and norepinephrine into the bloodstream, increasing heart rate, blood flow to muscles, and energy availability. This endocrine response, often called the fight-or-flight reaction, links neural signaling with hormonal regulation. Studying the adrenal medulla helps explain homeostasis, stress physiology, and disorders involving catecholamine production, including tumors such as pheochromocytoma and conditions that alter cardiovascular or metabolic function.

Sympathetic Pathways: Collateral Ganglia and Adrenal Medulla

2025

The sympathetic pathways of the collateral ganglia and adrenal medulla serve unique but interconnected roles in the sympathetic response. Collateral Ganglia Sympathetic preganglionic axons reach the collateral ganglia along the route of splanchnic nerves. These nerves bypass the sympathetic trunk and communicate with sympathetic postganglionic neurons housed in the prevertebral ganglia. These ganglia supply the organs of the abdominopelvic cavity. The greater splanchnic nerve, formed by the...

2017

'Super-selective' adrenal venous sampling (ssAVS, also called segmental adrenal venous sampling: sAVS) was performed using a micro-catheter to identify adrenal segment(s) that produce excessive amounts of hormones. The ssAVS technique was described, cases in which adrenal segmental lesion(s) were identified by ssAVS were presented, and the usefulness of ssAVS in future adrenal research was discussed.

Fecal Glucocorticoid Analysis: Non-invasive Adrenal Monitoring in Equids

Adrenal activity can be assessed in the equine species by analysis of feces for corticosterone metabolites. The method offers a non-invasive option to assess long term patterns in both domestic and free ranging horses. This protocol describes the enzyme linked immunoassay involved and the associated biochemical validation.

Anatomy of the Adrenal Glands

The adrenal or supra-renal glands, situated above the kidneys and aligned with the twelfth rib, are paired pyramid-shaped structures crucial for the body's stress response. During stress, these glands secrete hormones vital for adaptive physiological reactions. These glands possess a distinctive yellow tinge due to the stored cholesterol and fatty acids required for hormone synthesis. They are encased in a fibrous capsule and cushioned by fat. The adrenal gland comprises two distinct regions...
