Albuminuria

Albuminuria is the abnormal presence of albumin, the most abundant protein in blood plasma, in urine and is an important indicator of impaired kidney function. It occurs when damage to the glomerular filtration barrier increases its permeability, allowing albumin to pass from the blood into the urinary filtrate; reduced tubular reabsorption can also contribute. In biology and clinical research, measuring urinary albumin helps detect early kidney injury, particularly in diabetes and hypertension, before substantial loss of filtration occurs. Albuminuria levels support disease monitoring, risk assessment, and evaluation of treatments that protect renal function.
