Chemical Solutions

Chemical solutions are homogeneous mixtures in which one or more solutes dissolve in a solvent, providing a controlled environment for chemical and biological reactions. Their behavior depends on factors such as solute concentration, solvent properties, temperature, pH, and osmolarity, which influence molecular interactions and the movement of substances across biological membranes. In biology, carefully prepared solutions support cell culture, buffer reactions, enzyme assays, microscopy, and molecular analysis. Controlling solution composition helps maintain cellular conditions, stabilize biomolecules, and produce reproducible experimental results, making solution preparation and concentration calculations essential skills in laboratory research.

Chemical Reactions in Aqueous Solutions

Chemical substances interact in many different ways. Certain chemical reactions exhibit common patterns of reactivity. Due to the vast number of chemical reactions, it becomes necessary to classify them based on the observed patterns of interaction. Water is a good solvent that can dissolve many substances. For this reason, many chemical reactions take place in water. Such reactions are called aqueous reactions. The three most common types of aqueous reactions are precipitation, acid-base, and...

The study of methods to generate on-demand hydrogen for fuel cells continues to grow in importance. However, systems to measure hydrogen evolution from the reaction of chemicals with water can be complicated and expensive. This article details a simple, low-cost, and robust method to measure the evolution of hydrogen gas.

Making Solutions in the Laboratory

The ability to successfully make solutions is a basic laboratory skill performed in virtually all biological and chemical experiments. A solution is a homogenous mixture of solute dissolved in bulk liquid known as the solvent. Solutions can be described by their solute concentration, a measure of how much solute is present per unit of solution. In this video, a step-by-step procedure for how to make a water-based, or aqueous, solution for biological applications is presented. The video...

Enthalpy of Solution

There are two criteria that favor, but do not guarantee, the spontaneous formation of a solution: A decrease in the internal energy of the system (an exothermic change, as discussed in the previous chapter on thermochemistry) An increased dispersal of matter in the system (which indicates an increase in the entropy of the system, as you will learn about in the later chapter on thermodynamics) In the process of dissolution, an internal energy change often, but not always, occurs as heat is...
