Combustion Reaction

A combustion reaction is a rapid, exothermic oxidation process in which a fuel reacts with an oxidant, commonly oxygen, to release energy as heat and often light. The reaction begins when the system reaches an activation temperature, allowing chemical bonds in the fuel and oxygen to rearrange into products such as carbon dioxide and water while releasing energy. In biology, combustion provides a useful comparison for cellular respiration, where enzymes control the oxidation of nutrients through stepwise electron-transfer reactions rather than a flame. This connection supports the study of bioenergetics, oxygen consumption, ATP production, metabolism, and the effects of oxidative stress.

A protocol for measuring flame speeds of a reactive mixture composed of tetraiodine nonoxide (I4O9) and aluminum (Al) is presented. A method for resolving reaction kinetics using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is also presented. It was found that I4O9 is 150% more reactive than other iodine(V) oxides.

Hess’s law can be used to determine the enthalpy change of any reaction if the corresponding enthalpies of formation of the reactants and products are available. The main reaction may be divided into stepwise reactions : (i) decompositions of the reactants into their component elements, for which the enthalpy changes are proportional to the negative of the enthalpies of formation of the reactants, −ΔHf°(reactants), followed by (ii) re-combinations of the elements (obtained in step 1) to give...

Oxidation and Reduction Some chemical reactions can be classified as reduction-oxidation reactions, or redox reactions. Oxidation is the process of matter, like an atom or ionic molecule, losing one or more electrons, and reduction is the process of the matter gaining one or more electrons. Oxidation States Each atom in a molecule has its own oxidation state or oxidation number. The oxidation state describes how oxidized a molecule is relative to its free elemental form. The oxidation state is...

A balanced chemical equation provides a great deal of information in a very succinct format. Chemical formulas provide the identities of the reactants and products involved in the chemical change, allowing classification of the reaction. Coefficients provide the relative numbers of these chemical species, allowing a quantitative assessment of the relationships between the amounts of substances consumed and produced by the reaction. These quantitative relationships are known as the reaction’s...

A chemical reaction is a process by which the bonds in the atoms of substances are rearranged to generate new substances. Matter cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction—the same type and number of atoms that make up the reactants are still present in the products. Merely, the rearrangement of chemical bonds produces new compounds. Chemical Reactions Rearrange Atoms into New Substances A chemical reaction takes starting materials—the reactants—and changes them into different...
