Isotonic Solution Perfusion

Isotonic solution perfusion is the circulation of a solution with an osmotic concentration similar to that of body fluids through tissues, organs, or vascular systems. Because the solution produces little net water movement across cell membranes, it helps maintain cell volume and reduces osmotic stress during fluid exchange. In biological research, perfusion can wash, support, or preserve tissues while allowing investigators to examine vascular function and cellular responses under controlled conditions. This approach is useful in anatomy and physiology studies, organ and tissue preparation, and experimental models that require stable extracellular conditions.

Making Solutions in the Laboratory

2023

The ability to successfully make solutions is a basic laboratory skill performed in virtually all biological and chemical experiments. A solution is a homogenous mixture of solute dissolved in bulk liquid known as the solvent. Solutions can be described by their solute concentration, a measure of how much solute is present per unit of solution. In this video, a step-by-step procedure for how to make a water-based, or aqueous, solution for biological applications is presented. The video...

Isotonic and Isometric Muscle Contractions

2024

Two primary types of muscle contractions are isotonic and isometric, each serving unique functions and involving distinct mechanisms. Both isotonic and isometric contractions are integral to the body's complex system of movement and stability. Isotonic exercises contribute significantly to functional strength and movement, while isometric contractions are crucial for maintaining posture and joint stability. Isotonic contractions Isotonic contractions occur when a muscle changes length while the...

Osmosis and Osmotic Pressure of Solutions

A number of natural and synthetic materials exhibit selective permeation, meaning that only molecules or ions of a certain size, shape, polarity, charge, and so forth, are capable of passing through (permeating) the material. Biological cell membranes provide elegant examples of selective permeation in nature, while dialysis tubing used to remove metabolic wastes from blood is a more simplistic technological example. Regardless of how they may be fabricated, these materials are generally...
