Laboratory Equipment

Laboratory equipment comprises the tools and instruments used to measure, manipulate, preserve, and analyze materials under controlled conditions, making biological investigations more precise and reproducible. Different devices apply specific physical principles: microscopes use lenses to magnify cells and microorganisms, pipettes deliver measured liquid volumes, centrifuges separate components by density during spinning, and incubators maintain suitable temperature conditions for growth or reactions. Together, these instruments support cell culture, microscopy, molecular biology, microbiology, and biochemical analysis. Proper selection, calibration, and use of laboratory equipment improve data quality, enable controlled experiments, and help researchers investigate cellular processes, disease mechanisms, and biological systems.

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Electric machines and power electronics experiments involve electrical currents, voltages, power, and energy quantities that should be handled with extreme diligence and care. These may include three-phase AC voltage (208 V, 230 V, or 480 V), up to 250 V DC voltages, and currents that can reach 10 A. Electrocution occurs when an electrical path is established through the body with very low currents...

Proper Operation of Vacuum Based Equipment

Source: Robert M. Rioux, Ajay Sathe & Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Vacuum is required for a number of laboratory procedures. This is most routinely achieved in the laboratory by the use of vacuum pumps. In addition to working at low pressures, vacuum pumps can also be used to enable rapid changing of the atmospheres in a reactor or flask by evacuation and backfilling.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Dana Lashley - College of William and Mary Demonstrated by: Timothy Beck and Lucas Arney Many reactions in organic chemistry are moisture-sensitive and must be carried out under careful exclusion of water. In these cases the reagents have a high affinity to react with water from the atmosphere and if left exposed the desired reaction will not take place or give poor yields, because the reactants are chemically altered. In order to prevent undesired reactions with H2O...
