Messenger Rna

Messenger RNA (mRNA) is a transient nucleic acid molecule that carries genetic instructions from DNA to ribosomes, making it a central intermediary in gene expression. In eukaryotic cells, RNA polymerase transcribes a gene into a primary transcript that is processed by capping, splicing, and polyadenylation before mature mRNA is translated, as ribosomes read its codons to assemble a protein. Studying messenger RNA helps researchers measure gene activity, understand cellular differentiation and disease, and develop applications including mRNA-based vaccines and therapeutic protein production. Its short-lived nature also enables cells to adjust protein synthesis rapidly in response to changing conditions.

What are Second Messengers?

2021

Because many receptor binding ligands are hydrophilic, they do not cross the cell membrane and thus their message must be relayed to a second messenger on the inside. There are several second messenger pathways, each with their own way of relaying information. G-protein coupled receptors can activate both phosphoinositol and cyclic AMP (cAMP) second messenger pathways. The phosphoinositol path is active when the receptor induces phospholipase C to hydrolyze the phospholipid,...

Here we describe a protocol for the generation of cationic nanoliposomes, which is based on the dry-film method and can be used for the safe and efficient delivery of in vitro transcribed messenger RNA.

RNA Interference

2019

RNA interference (RNAi) is a process in which a small non-coding RNA molecule blocks the post-transcriptional expression of a gene by binding to its messenger RNA (mRNA) and preventing the protein from being translated. This process occurs naturally in cells, often through the activity of genomically-encoded microRNAs. Researchers can take advantage of this mechanism by introducing synthetic RNAs to deactivate specific genes for research or therapeutic purposes. For example, RNAi could be used...

Many receptor binding ligands are hydrophilic; they do not cross the cell membrane but bind to cell-surface receptors. Thus, their message must be relayed by second messengers present in the cell cytoplasm. There are several second messenger pathways, each with its own way of relaying information. For example, the G protein-coupled receptors can activate both phosphoinositol and cyclic AMP (cAMP) second messenger pathways. The phosphoinositol pathway is active when the receptor induces...
