Uranyl-formate Stain

Uranyl-formate stain is an electron microscopy contrast reagent used to reveal the structure and morphology of biological specimens, particularly when transparent material must be visualized against a darker background. In negative staining, a uranyl-containing solution surrounds particles on an electron microscopy grid and dries into an electron-dense film; the stain scatters electrons more strongly than the specimen, outlining its shape and surface features. This method supports rapid assessment of purified proteins, viruses, and other macromolecular assemblies, helping researchers evaluate particle uniformity, aggregation, and preparation quality before higher-resolution imaging or structural analysis.
