Peritoneal Mesothelial Cells

Peritoneal mesothelial cells are specialized cells that form the protective lining of the abdominal cavity and regulate interactions between the peritoneum, organs, and surrounding fluid. They maintain a thin, selective barrier and secrete extracellular matrix components, cytokines, and other factors that influence inflammation, tissue repair, and cell adhesion. In cancer research, tumor cells can attach to and invade this lining, while mesothelial cells may undergo mesothelial-to-mesenchymal transition, altering the peritoneal microenvironment. Studying these processes helps clarify peritoneal metastasis, ascites formation, and tumor implantation, supporting research into disease models, biomarkers, and therapies that disrupt cancer spread.
