Targeted Therapy

Targeted therapy is a treatment approach that selectively disrupts molecules, signaling pathways, or cellular features that support disease, making it an important strategy in cancer research. In oncology, drugs may bind altered proteins, inhibit enzymes such as kinases, block growth-factor receptors, or mark tumor cells for immune destruction, often guided by molecular or biomarker testing. These therapies can limit tumor growth while reducing damage to some healthy tissues compared with less selective treatments. Researchers use targeted therapy to match treatments to tumor characteristics, study treatment response, and investigate resistance mechanisms that can cause cancers to progress despite initial benefit.

The targeted cancer therapies, also known as “molecular targeted therapies,” take advantage of the molecular and genetic differences between the cancer cells and the normal cells. It needs a thorough understanding of the cancer cells to develop drugs that can target specific molecular aspects that drive the growth, progression, and spread of cancer cells without affecting the growth and survival of other normal cells in the body. There are several types of targeted therapies against specific...

Many types of human brain tumors are localized to specific regions within the brain and are difficult to grow in culture. This protocol addresses the role of tumor microenvironment and investigates new drug treatments by analyzing fluorescent primary brain tumor cells growing in an organotypic mouse brain slice.
