Acyl Oxygen Cleavage

Acyl oxygen cleavage is the breaking of the bond between a carbonyl carbon and the attached oxygen in an ester or related carboxylic acid derivative. It commonly occurs through nucleophilic acyl substitution: a nucleophile attacks the carbonyl carbon, forms a tetrahedral intermediate, and expels an oxygen-containing leaving group as the carbonyl is re-formed. Acidic or basic conditions can promote this pathway, depending on the substrate and nucleophile. Understanding acyl oxygen cleavage helps chemists distinguish it from alkyl oxygen cleavage, predict ester hydrolysis and transesterification products, and design synthetic transformations involving acyl compounds.

2023

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder The physical properties of minerals comprise various measurable and discernible attributes, including color, streak, magnetic properties, hardness, crystal growth form, and crystal cleavage. Each of these properties are mineral-specific, and they are fundamentally related to a particular mineral’s chemical make-up and atomic structure. This experiment examines two properties that stem primarily from symmetric repetition of...

The reversible addition of palmitate to proteins is an important regulator of intracellular protein trafficking. This is of particular interest in neurons where many synaptic proteins are palmitoylated. We utilize a simple biochemical method to detect palmitoylated proteins in cultured neurons, which can be adapted for multiple cell types and tissues.
