Benzoic Acid Synthesis

Benzoic Acid Synthesis is the preparation of benzoic acid, an aromatic carboxylic acid used in chemical manufacturing, laboratory analysis, and formulation. In a common route, an alkylbenzene such as toluene undergoes oxidation: benzylic carbon-hydrogen bonds are converted through successive oxidation steps into a carboxyl group, often under strongly oxidizing conditions, followed by acidification to isolate the product. Benzoic acid synthesis illustrates side-chain oxidation, functional-group transformation, crystallization, and purification, while providing access to a widely used preservative, an intermediate for dyes and pharmaceuticals, and a reference material for analytical chemistry.

2023

Source: Vy M. Dong and Diane Le, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Merrifield's solid-phase synthesis is a Nobel Prize winning invention where a reactant molecule is bound on a solid support and undergoes successive chemical reactions to form a desired compound. When the molecules are bound to a solid support, excess reagents and byproducts can be removed by washing away the impurities, while the target compound remains bound to the resin. Specifically, we will...

Synthesis and Decomposition Reactions

2020

Synthesis and decomposition are two types of redox reactions. Synthesis means to make something, whereas decomposition means to break something. The reactions are accompanied by chemical and energy changes. Synthesis Reactions Synthesis reactions are also called combination reactions. It is a reaction in which two or more substances combine to form a complex substance. Synthesis reactions are generally represented as: A + B → AB or A + B → C. The formation of nitrogen dioxide is a synthesis...
