Bioelectrochemical System

A bioelectrochemical system (BES) is a device that couples biological activity with electrochemical reactions to move electrons between living cells and an electrode, making it a useful platform for studying and controlling microbial metabolism. At an anode, microbes oxidize organic compounds and release electrons that travel through an external circuit; at a cathode, a reduction reaction consumes those electrons, often with protons or oxygen. BES designs can generate electrical current, produce fuels or chemicals, and remove pollutants during wastewater treatment. In chemistry and environmental research, they support biosensors, microbial fuel cells, resource recovery, and mechanistic studies of electron transfer, linking molecular redox processes to practical technologies.

Here we present a protocol for characterizing mediated extracellular electron transfer (EET) in lactic acid bacteria using a three-electrode, two-chamber bioelectrochemical system. We illustrate this method with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and the redox mediator 1,4-dihydroxy-2-naphthoic acid and provide a thorough description of the electrochemical techniques used to evaluate mediated EET.

Electrochemical Biosensing

2023

Electrochemical biosensors detect the binding of a target molecule by sensing an oxidation-reduction event. These sensors paved the way for modern biosensing after the invention of the glucose biosensor. This video will introduce electrochemical biosensing, show the workings of the glucose biosensor, and discuss how electrochemical biosensors are used in cancer detection.

Cyclic Voltammetry (CV)

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Kayla Green — Texas Christian University A Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) experiment involves the scan of a range of potential voltages while measuring current. In the CV experiment, the potential of an immersed, stationary electrode is scanned from a predetermined starting potential to a final value (called the switching potential) and then the reverse scan is obtained. This gives a 'cyclic' sweep of potentials and the current vs. potential curve derived from the data is...

Large-Scale Production of Extracellular Vesicles from High-Density 3D Cell Cultures in Hollow Fiber Perfusion Bioreactors
