Dew Point

Dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated with water vapor and condensation begins, making it a key measure of atmospheric moisture. As air cools at constant pressure, the saturation vapor pressure of water decreases until it matches the vapor pressure of the water present; further cooling causes liquid droplets to form on surfaces or in the air. In chemistry, dew point measurements help characterize humidity, phase changes, and vapor-liquid equilibrium. They support environmental monitoring, drying and storage processes, gas analysis, and the control of moisture-sensitive reactions and industrial systems.

Synthesis of Masarimycin, a Small Molecule Inhibitor of Gram-Positive Bacterial Growth

2022

A detailed protocol is presented for preparing the bacteriostatic diamide masarimycin, a small molecule probe that inhibits the growth of Bacillus subtilis and Streptococcus pneumoniae by targeting cell wall degradation. Its application as a chemical probe is demonstrated in synergy/antagonism assays and morphological studies with B. subtilis and S. pneumoniae.

Simple Distillation - Concepts

Distillation of a Miscible Mixture Some liquids will evaporate entirely over time if left in an open container at room temperature. However, this evaporation process can be significantly accelerated if the liquid is heated. As the liquid is heated, the molecules within it gain the energy to escape the liquid phase and transition into the gas phase in the form of bubbles. This phenomenon is called boiling. Vapor Pressure Consider a closed container of liquid. Initially, some of this liquid...

2015

We describe the fabrication and characterization of nano-biological systems interfacing nanostructured substrates with immobilized proteins and aptamers. The relevant experimental steps involving lithographic fabrication of nanostructured substrates, bio-functionalization, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) characterization, are reported. SERS detection of surface-immobilized proteins, and probing of protein-ligand and aptamer-ligand binding is demonstrated.
