High Shear Dispersion

High shear dispersion is a chemical processing technique that uses intense mechanical forces to distribute one material uniformly throughout another, improving the stability and performance of mixtures. A high-speed rotor, impeller, or rotor-stator system generates strong velocity gradients and turbulence that break agglomerates, reduce particle or droplet size, and promote rapid wetting and mixing. In chemistry, the method supports the preparation of suspensions, emulsions, colloidal systems, coatings, pigments, and pharmaceutical formulations. Process conditions such as shear rate, mixing time, composition, and temperature influence dispersion quality, reproducibility, and the resulting material properties.

Distribution and Dispersion

Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with their environment and with one another. An important aspect of ecology is understanding where species are found and how individuals are distributed within those areas. The geographic range of a species refers to the total area where its members are located, while dispersion describes the pattern of spacing of individuals within that range.Geographic Range and Dispersion PatternsWithin a species’ geographic range, individuals may be distributed...

Adapting Taylor Dispersion to Measure the Dispersion Coefficient of Electrolyte Solutions via an Accessible Microfluidic Setup

2025

Here, we present a protocol to adapt the Taylor dispersion experiment to the microscale using microchannels fabricated in-house with a desktop craft cutter. The experimental platform can be used to compute the diffusion coefficient of single-species passive tracers and to visualize multispecies ion interaction and separation.

Detection of Biofilm Disassembly Through a Dispersion Assay

2025

The video showcases a biofilm dispersion assay using a multi-well plate. Buffer and glucose treatment disassemble the biofilm, releasing bacteria, while bile salts induce stress, retaining bacteria in the protective extracellular polymeric substance. Higher dispersion with buffer and glucose confirms successful biofilm disassembly, estimated by colony forming units measurement.
