Ion Transfer Tube Temperature

Ion transfer tube temperature is the controlled heating applied to the interface that carries ions from an atmospheric-pressure ion source into a mass spectrometer. By warming the tube, analysts promote solvent evaporation and desolvation while guiding gas-phase ions into the instrument; the selected temperature must balance efficient transfer against thermal degradation or unwanted chemical changes. In chemistry, optimizing this parameter can improve signal stability, sensitivity, and measurement reproducibility in liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry and related analyses. Its effects are especially important for samples containing thermally labile compounds, where excessive heating may reduce molecular-ion abundance or alter the observed mass spectrum.

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Heat exchangers transfer heat from one fluid to another fluid. Multiple classes of heat exchangers exist to fill different needs. Some of the most common types are shell and tube exchangers and plate exchangers1. Shell and tube heat exchangers use a system of tubes through which fluid flows1. One set of tubes contains the liquid to be cooled or heated, while the second...

Common Ion Effect

2020

Compared with pure water, the solubility of an ionic compound is less in aqueous solutions containing a common ion (one also produced by dissolution of the ionic compound). This is an example of a phenomenon known as the common ion effect, which is a consequence of the law of mass action that may be explained using Le Châtelier’s principle. Consider the dissolution of silver iodide: This solubility equilibrium may be shifted left by the addition of either silver(I) or iodide ions, resulting in...
