Mark-houwink Relationship

The Mark-Houwink relationship is an empirical equation in polymer chemistry that connects a polymer’s intrinsic viscosity with its viscosity-average molecular weight. It is expressed as [η] = K Mᵃ, where [η] is intrinsic viscosity, M is molecular weight, and K and a depend on the polymer, solvent, temperature, and chain conformation. Researchers determine intrinsic viscosity from dilute-solution viscosity measurements and use the equation to estimate molecular weight when direct measurement is difficult. Changes in the exponent a can also indicate differences in polymer-chain shape, flexibility, branching, or solvent quality, supporting polymer characterization and molecular-weight analysis.

A device was created to demonstrate electromyography-based control to a lay audience. After the success of the initial device, a second device was made with greater flexibility in functionality for demonstration and research purposes. This protocol describes the process of building and calibrating both devices.

Bone Markings

Bones have various surface features that help form joints and attach to other soft tissues. Depending on the function, bone markings are categorized into articulating projections, processes for attachment, depressions, and openings. Articulating Projections Articulating projections are found where two bones meet to form a joint. These structures are usually found at the ends of bones. The largest articulation is a rounded projection called the head, supported by a narrow neck at the ends of...

Forming an Evolutionary Hypothesis ExpandNOTE: A cladogram is an important tool for forming an evolutionary hypothesis. A cladogram is a tree-shaped chart used to depict the hypothetical genealogical relationships between species. The tips or leaves of the chart represent specific species and the branches of the tree are different lengths. The different lengths represent the degree of change between each of the species. The common ancestor of all of the species that a specific line branches...

Humans have been attempting to properly classify living things since Aristotle made the first attempt during the 4th century BC. Aristotle’s system was improved upon during the Renaissance and then, subsequently, by Carolus Linnaeus in the mid 1700’s. These more formal classification and organization systems grouped species by their physical similarity to one another. For example, all vertebrates have a backbone, but invertebrates do not. Traits like the backbone are called synapomorphies,...

What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...
