Nanotube Synthesis

Nanotube synthesis is the chemical production of hollow, cylindrical nanostructures with controlled dimensions, composition, and morphology. In carbon nanotube growth, methods such as chemical vapor deposition, arc discharge, and laser ablation generate reactive carbon species; in catalytic processes, metal nanoparticles decompose a carbon-containing precursor and guide carbon precipitation into tubular walls. Adjusting temperature, pressure, catalyst composition, and precursor flow influences nanotube diameter, length, alignment, and defect density. These structures support research in molecular electronics, composite materials, energy storage, sensing, and catalysis, while synthesis control remains essential for reproducible properties and scalable manufacturing.

Here, we present a protocol to synthesize and characterize Fe-doped aluminosilicate nanotubes. The materials are obtained by either sol-gel synthesis upon addition of FeCl3•6H2O to the mixture containing the Si and Al precursors or by post-synthesis ionic exchange of preformed aluminosilicate nanotubes.

Solution-suspendable gold nanotubes with controlled dimensions can be synthesized by electrochemical deposition in porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes using a hydrophobic polymer core. Gold nanotubes and nanotube arrays hold promise for applications in plasmonic biosensing, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, photo-thermal heating, ionic and molecular transport, microfluidics, catalysis and electrochemical sensing.

Anodic arc discharge is one of the most practical and efficient methods to synthesize various carbon nanostructures. To increase the arc controllability and flexibility, a non-uniform magnetic field was introduced to process the one-step synthesis of large-scale graphene flakes and high-purity single-walled carbon nanotubes.

We discussed the synthesis of individual graphitic nanocups using a series of techniques including chemical vapor deposition, acid oxidation and probe-tip sonication. By citrate reduction of HAuCl4, the graphitic nanocups were effectively corked with gold nanoparticles due to the chemically reactive edges of the cups.
