Quaternary Ammonium

Quaternary ammonium compounds are salts containing a nitrogen atom covalently bonded to four carbon-containing groups, giving the nitrogen a permanent positive charge; they are important in synthetic, industrial, and biological chemistry. Their properties arise from this cationic center and a counterion, while structures containing both a charged ammonium group and hydrophobic alkyl chains behave as surfactants that associate with interfaces and can disrupt microbial membranes. Consequently, quaternary ammonium chemistry supports disinfectants, fabric softeners, antistatic agents, phase-transfer catalysts, and ionic-liquid design. Relating molecular structure to solubility, aggregation, and membrane interactions helps researchers tailor these compounds for practical performance and evaluate their environmental persistence.

Begin with a wetland soil-derived enrichment culture containing bacterial communities. The culture exhibits Feammox activity, ammonium oxidation coupled to ferric iron reduction, indicating the enrichment of a bacterium capable of this metabolic process.Serially dilute the culture using media.Streak the diluted samples onto test agar plates supplemented with ferric iron and ammonium.Use control plates that lack either ferric iron or ammonium, or contain ferric iron with organic carbon instead of...

Construction and Systematical Symmetric Studies of a Series of Supramolecular Clusters with Binary or Ternary Ammonium Triphenylacetates

2016

This article describes construction of a series of hydrogen-bonding supramolecular clusters in crystals using primary ammonium triphenylacetates, which are recrystallized from non-polar solvents. This selective construction of the supramolecular clusters leads to effective systematical symmetric studies about a correlation between the supramolecular clusters and their components.

2021

This protocol is for the isolation of quartz grains by size for luminescence dating of sediments. Outlined are physical cleansing and chemical digestions by soaking sequentially in H2O2, HCl, HF, and HCl again to isolate quartz grains. The quartz purity is quantified with microscopic assessment, Raman spectroscopy, and IR depletion ratio.
