Single Nanoparticle Electrochemistry

Single nanoparticle electrochemistry is a set of electrochemical methods that measures and interprets the behavior of individual nanoparticles rather than ensemble-averaged responses, revealing how nanoscale structure affects reactivity. In a typical experiment, a nanoparticle collides with or is immobilized at a microelectrode, where an applied potential drives electron transfer or a surface redox reaction; the resulting current transient reports on particle size, composition, catalytic activity, or reaction kinetics. These measurements help distinguish heterogeneity among particles and clarify mechanisms in electrocatalysis, sensing, corrosion, and energy-conversion materials, supporting the design of more efficient nanoscale catalysts and devices.

Saturable and reverse saturable scattering were discovered in isolated plasmonic particles and adopted as a novel non-bleaching contrast method in super-resolution microscopy. Here the experimental procedures of detecting and extracting nonlinear scattering are explained in detail, as well as how to enhance resolution with the aid of saturated excitation microscopy.

Electrochemistry: Overview

2024

Electrochemistry is the branch of chemistry that studies the relationship between electrical quantities and chemical reactions, particularly oxidation and reduction. Oxidation is the loss of electrons from a substance, whereas reduction refers to the gain of electrons. A substance with a strong electron affinity is called an oxidizing agent (oxidant), and a reducing agent (reductant) is a species that donates electrons. Oxidation and reduction processes are pivotal to electrochemical reactions,...

We describe the production and characterization of nanoparticles and microparticles composed of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) using vitamin E-TPGS as an emulsifier. By varying formulation parameters such as the concentration of emulsifier, it is possible to produce nanoparticles with mean diameters ranging from 220 nm to 1.98 µm.
