Oral Inspection

Oral inspection is a systematic visual examination of the mouth and surrounding tissues used to assess oral health and identify abnormalities. During the examination, a clinician uses adequate lighting, mirrors, and gentle tissue retraction to inspect structures such as the lips, mucosa, tongue, gingiva, teeth, palate, and throat for changes in color, texture, shape, or continuity. In clinical practice, oral inspection supports early recognition of inflammation, infection, trauma, lesions, and other conditions that may require further evaluation. It also provides a rapid, noninvasive basis for diagnosis, treatment planning, patient education, and referral when needed.
