Renal Plasma Flow

Renal plasma flow is the volume of plasma delivered to the kidneys per minute, an important indicator of renal perfusion and kidney function. Clinicians estimate effective renal plasma flow using para-aminohippurate (PAH) clearance: PAH is filtered at the glomerulus and actively secreted by proximal tubule cells, so the kidneys remove most PAH from plasma in one pass under appropriate conditions. This clearance-based measurement supports assessment of renal hemodynamics and helps interpret changes in kidney perfusion or disease in clinical practice and research. Because it is an effective rather than absolute estimate, it is often interpreted alongside glomerular filtration rate.

2016

Early stage hemodynamic dysfunction is critical to the development of kidney disease. Yet, detection methodologies are limited. Recent advances in sonography provide a noninvasive, accurate option for early detection of kidney injury. This study outlines a step-by-step, sonographic methodology for detecting kidney dysfunction using a drug-induced nephrotoxicity rat model.

Factors Affecting Renal Clearance: Drug's Physicochemical Properties and Plasma Levels

2025

Renal clearance of a drug is influenced by various factors, including its physicochemical properties and plasma levels. These factors play a significant role in determining how efficiently the kidneys eliminate a drug. One important factor is the drug's molecular size. The kidneys readily excrete smaller molecules below 300 Daltons (Da). On the other hand, molecules weighing between 300 and 500 Da are excreted through both urine and bile. Larger molecules above 500 Da tend to be excreted less...
