Urethral Strictures

Urethral strictures are abnormal narrowings of the urethra caused by scar tissue, limiting the passage of urine and potentially affecting urinary health. They develop when injury, inflammation, infection, or instrumentation damages the urethral lining, triggering fibrosis that reduces the channel’s diameter and resistance to urine flow. Clinicians evaluate suspected strictures through medical history, uroflowmetry, imaging such as retrograde urethrography, and cystoscopy, then select treatment based on location, length, and recurrence. Options include dilation, internal urethrotomy, and urethroplasty, making accurate diagnosis essential for restoring urination, preventing complications, and reducing recurrence.

In the present protocol, a urethral stricture induction was developed in Wistar rats, followed by urethral reconstruction with a buccal mucosa graft. A retrograde urethrogram and laser Doppler assessment were performed, validating urethral reconstruction (after stricture formation) and graft placement.

Esophageal Strictures-I: Introduction

2025

Esophageal strictures involve abnormal narrowing or tightening of the esophagus. They vary in length and severity, ranging from mild constriction to complete obstruction, and are classified as benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Etiology The primary cause of esophageal strictures is long-standing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), accounting for about 70 to 80% of adult cases. Chronic acid reflux can lead to injury and scarring of the esophageal lining, culminating in...

Traditional modeling of partial bladder outlet obstruction in rodents is fraught with animal mortality. A denervation injury from dissection around the proximal urethra and bladder neck is also of major concern. We developed and evaluated a safe and reliable mid-urethral obstruction model, avoiding the shortcomings of the traditional model.
