Tissue Morphology

Tissue morphology is the study of the form, architecture, and spatial organization of cells within tissues, providing a framework for understanding how biological structures develop and function. During development, coordinated cell proliferation, differentiation, migration, adhesion, and interactions with the extracellular matrix shape tissues into organized layers and patterns. Researchers assess tissue morphology using microscopy, histological staining, and three-dimensional imaging to track structural changes over time. These analyses help link cellular behaviors to processes such as organ formation, tissue remodeling, and disease-associated developmental abnormalities, making morphology an essential bridge between molecular mechanisms and the physical organization of developing organisms.

Microglia are brain immune cells that survey and react to altered brain physiology through morphologic changes which may be evaluated quantitatively. This protocol outlines an ImageJ based analysis protocol to represent microglia morphology as continuous data according to metrics such as cell ramification, complexity, and shape.

Bacterial and archaeal cells exhibit remarkable diversity in shape and structure, critical in their adaptability and functionality. Among bacteria, the most commonly observed shapes include cocci and bacilli. Cocci are spherical and may exist singly or in groupings such as pairs (diplococci), chains (streptococci), clusters (staphylococci), or tetrads. Bacilli, in contrast, are rod-shaped and can also occur as single cells, in pairs, or chains, depending on their environmental and genetic...

Functional and Morphological Assessment of Diaphragm Innervation by Phrenic Motor Neurons

Compound muscle action potential recording quantitatively assesses functional diaphragm innervation by phrenic motor neurons. Whole-mount diaphragm immunohistochemistry assesses morphological innervation at individual neuromuscular junctions. The goal of this protocol is to demonstrate how these two powerful methodologies can be used in various rodent models of spinal cord disease.
