Emulsion Breaking

Emulsion breaking is the controlled separation of two immiscible liquids that are dispersed as droplets within one another, a process essential for efficient fluid handling in engineering. It works by destabilizing the interfacial film that keeps droplets apart, allowing them to collide, coalesce, and separate through gravity, often with assistance from heat, chemical demulsifiers, electrical fields, or centrifugation. Engineers use emulsion breaking in crude-oil dehydration, wastewater treatment, food processing, and chemical manufacturing to recover valuable phases, reduce water and contaminant content, and prevent equipment fouling. Selecting suitable conditions improves separation efficiency while limiting energy use and chemical consumption.

The “Break-Even” Point

2025

The macroeconomic consumption function illustrates the relationship between aggregate consumption (C) and national income (Y). It is typically expressed as:C = a + bYwhere a denotes autonomous consumption—expenditures that occur regardless of income—and b, the marginal propensity to consume (MPC), indicates the fraction of additional income that is spent. The break-even point occurs where:C = YSolving for income yields the break-even level of national income:At this level, the entire output...

Preparing an Antigen-Adjuvant Emulsion to Induce Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis

2025

This video demonstrates an efficient homogenization technique to generate an antigen-adjuvant emulsion to induce experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in a murine model. The emulsion contains an autoantigen — myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) — in the water phase, surrounded by a continuous oil phase comprising an inactivated pathogenic bacteria. The emulsion ensures a sustained release of antigens for a prolonged immune response.

Fixing Double-strand Breaks

2020

The double-stranded structure of DNA has two major advantages. First, it serves as a safe repository of genetic information where one strand serves as the back-up in case the other strand is damaged. Second, the double-helical structure can be wrapped around proteins called histones to form nucleosomes, which can then be tightly wound to form chromosomes. This way, DNA chains up to 2 inches long can be contained within microscopic structures in a cell. A double-stranded break not only damages...

Minimum Burning Pressures of Water-based Emulsion Explosives

2017

We present an apparatus based on hot-wire ignition in a pressurized enclosure and an associated methodology to measure the minimum pressure required to induce sustained combustion in water-based emulsion explosives. This method improves product characterization to allow one to use them more safely during pumping and mixing operations.

Break-Even Analysis

2026

Break-even analysis is a managerial accounting technique used to determine the level of sales at which total revenue equals total costs. At the break-even point, a business neither earns a profit nor incurs a loss because all fixed and variable costs are fully recovered. This analysis is widely used in planning, budgeting, pricing, and evaluating the financial feasibility of new products, projects, or business operations. The break-even point depends on three key factors: selling price per unit,...
