Flood Prevention Engineering

Flood Prevention Engineering is the application of civil and environmental engineering principles to reduce flood risk to people, infrastructure, and ecosystems. It combines watershed assessment, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, and analysis of rainfall, runoff, river flow, and terrain to predict where water may accumulate or overflow. Engineers then design measures such as levees, floodwalls, drainage systems, detention basins, channel improvements, and restored wetlands to store, redirect, or slow floodwater. These approaches support resilient urban planning, infrastructure protection, emergency preparedness, and climate adaptation, while helping communities reduce economic losses and improve long-term water management.

Responses to Drought and Flooding

2020

Water plays a significant role in the life cycle of plants. However, insufficient or excess of water can be detrimental and pose a serious threat to plants. Under normal conditions, water taken up by the plant evaporates from leaves and other parts in a process called transpiration. In times of drought stress, water that evaporates by transpiration far exceeds the water absorbed from the soil, causing plants to wilt. The general plant response to drought stress is the synthesis of hormone...

Seedling Flood Assay for Screening Bacterial Resistance in Tomatoes

Source: Hassan, J. A., et al. High-Throughput Identification of Resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. Tomato in Tomato using Seedling Flood Assay. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates a method to screen for bacterial resistance in different tomato strains using ten-day-old seedlings inoculated with a bacterial suspension. It explains how bacteria invade through stomata, deliver effector proteins to suppress plant immunity, and how plant responses differ between susceptible and resistant...

This is a guideline for constructing in vivo vascularized tissue using a microsurgical arteriovenous loop or a flow-through pedicle configuration inside a tissue engineering chamber. The vascularized tissues generated can be employed for organ regeneration and replacement of tissue defects, as well as for drug testing and disease modeling.

Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer. Some...
