Hydro-viscous Clutch

A hydro-viscous clutch is a fluid-coupling device that transmits torque between rotating members through the controlled shear of a viscous fluid, enabling smooth power transfer without a rigid mechanical connection. When the driving and driven plates rotate with different speeds, fluid confined in the narrow plate gaps develops shear stress; adjusting the fluid volume, pressure, or plate separation changes the transmitted torque and allows controlled engagement. In engineering systems, hydro-viscous clutches support gradual starting, speed regulation, overload protection, and reduced mechanical shock in machinery such as conveyors, fans, pumps, and industrial drives. Their performance depends on fluid viscosity, operating temperature, plate geometry, and rotational speed.

Presented here is a mild 3D printing technique driven by alternating viscous-inertial forces to enable the construction of hydrogel microcarriers. Homemade nozzles offer flexibility, allowing easy replacement for different materials and diameters. Cell binding microcarriers with a diameter of 50-500 µm can be obtained and collected for further culturing.
