St Augustine Grass Sod

St Augustine Grass Sod is pre-grown turf made from sections of St. Augustine grass, a warm-season perennial commonly used to establish dense lawns in suitable climates. After installation, its roots anchor into the prepared soil while aboveground stolons spread laterally, allowing the transplanted turf to knit together under adequate moisture, sunlight, and nutrients. Its rapid visual establishment supports erosion control, soil coverage, and recreational or residential landscaping, but environmental performance depends on irrigation, mowing, fertilization, and local growing conditions. Evaluating these inputs helps researchers and land managers balance lawn appearance with water conservation, runoff reduction, and sustainable landscape maintenance.

2015

A protocol to generate a co-culture system consisting of neurons derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), primary cortical neurons and astrocytes is described. This co-culture system allows detection of the formation of synaptic contacts and circuits between new, iPSC-derived neurons and pre-existing cortical neurons expressing channelrhodopsin-2.

We present methods to evaluate how predation risk can alter the chemical quality of herbivore prey by inducing dietary changes to meet demands of heightened stress, and how the decomposition of carcasses from these stressed herbivores slows subsequent plant litter decomposition by soil microbes.

Carbon and Nitrogen Analysis of Environmental Samples

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Elemental Analysis is a method used to determine elemental composition of a material. In environmental samples such as soils, scientists are particularly interested in the amounts of two ecologically important elements, nitrogen and carbon. Elemental analysis by the flash combustion technique works by oxidizing the sample with a catalyst through combustion in a high-temperature chamber. The products of combustion are...
