Waterborne Bacteria

Waterborne bacteria are microorganisms that live in or spread through freshwater, groundwater, wastewater, and marine systems, where they can influence ecosystem health and human well-being. Their distribution depends on factors such as nutrient availability, temperature, oxygen conditions, biofilm formation, and resistance to environmental stress, while contaminated water can transport pathogenic species between environments and hosts. Environmental researchers monitor these organisms using culture-based assays, microscopy, and molecular detection methods to assess water quality and trace pollution sources. This work supports disease prevention, wastewater treatment, ecosystem management, and the evaluation of changing environmental conditions on microbial communities.

Glass wool filters have been used to concentrate waterborne viruses by a number of research groups around the world. Here we show a simple approach for constructing glass wool filters and demonstrate the filters are also effective in concentrating waterborne viral, bacterial and protozoan pathogens.

Here, we present a detailed protocol for the isolation and identification of antibiotic-resistant bacteria from water and the molecular characterization of their antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The use of culture-based and non-culture-based (metagenomic analysis) techniques provides complete information about the total bacterial diversity and the total pool of different ARGs present in freshwaters from Mumbai, India.

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Luisa Ikner The quality of water destined for use in agricultural, recreational, and domestic settings is of great importance due to the potential for outbreaks of waterborne disease. Microbial agents implicated in such events include parasites, bacteria, and viruses that are shed in high numbers in the feces of infected people and animals. Transmission to new and susceptible hosts may...
