Optical Beam Deflection

Optical beam deflection is a measurement technique that detects tiny changes in a surface or structure by tracking the angular displacement of a reflected light beam. In biosensing, a laser reflects from a functionalized microcantilever, and binding between antigens, antibodies, or pathogens alters surface stress, bending the cantilever and shifting the beam on a position-sensitive detector. This label-free approach can monitor immune recognition and pathogen interactions in real time, supporting the detection of infectious agents, cytokines, and other biomarkers. Its high sensitivity makes it useful for immunological research, diagnostic assay development, and studying molecular interactions during infection.

Accurately determining beam deflection and slope under various loading conditions in structural engineering is crucial for ensuring safety and structural integrity. Singularity functions offer a streamlined approach to analyzing beams, especially when multiple loading functions complicate the bending moment equation. Singularity functions, described in an earlier lesson, are powerful mathematical tools that represent discontinuities within a function commonly encountered in structural loading...

Large laser-interferometers are being constructed to create a new type of astronomy based on gravitational waves. Their sensitivities, as for many other high-precision experiments, are approaching fundamental noise limits such as the atomic vibration of their components. We are pioneering technologies to overcome these limits using novel laser beam shapes.

Maximum Deflection

When analyzing beams under unsymmetrical loads, such as a train moving on a bridge, it is crucial to accurately determine the points of maximum stress and deflection. The process involves identifying the maximum deflection of the beam, which may not always occur at its midpoint due to the uneven distribution of the load. The maximum deflection occurs at a specific point, known as point O, where the tangent to the deflection curve is horizontal. To find point O, the slope of the tangent at any...
