Adaptive Staircase Method

The Adaptive Staircase Method is an efficient experimental procedure that estimates a response threshold by changing the intensity of a stimulus according to a participant’s previous responses. After a correct detection or specified response, the method typically decreases stimulus intensity, while an incorrect response prompts an increase, creating a sequence that converges near the individual’s perceptual threshold. In medicine, this approach supports quantitative assessment of hearing, vision, sensory sensitivity, and pain perception while reducing the number of trials required compared with fixed-intensity testing. Its adaptive design improves measurement efficiency and can help researchers characterize patient differences, monitor disease-related changes, or evaluate treatment effects.

The Staircase Procedure for Finding a Perceptual Threshold

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Psychophysics is the name for a set of methods in perceptual psychology designed in order to relate the actual intensity of stimuli to their perceptual intensity. One important aspect of psychophysics involves the measurement of perceptual thresholds: How bright does a light need to be for a person to be able to detect it? How little pressure applied to the skin is detectable? How soft can a sound be and still be heard? Put...

Staircase Test for Motor Function Assessment in a Hemiparkinsonian Rat

2025

This video demonstrates the staircase test to assess motor function in a hemiparkinsonian rat with a right brain lesion. The lesion disrupts dopamine signaling, impairing left paw control, which results in more pellets remaining on the left stairs, indicating motor dysfunction.

A Novel Approach to Assess Motor Outcome of Deep Brain Stimulation Effects in the Hemiparkinsonian Rat: Staircase and Cylinder Test

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment option for Parkinson's disease. We established a study design to screen novel stimulation paradigms in rats. The protocol describes the use of the staircase test and cylinder test for motor outcome assessment in DBS treated hemiparkinsonian rats.

The Cold Plantar Assay (CPA) measures cold responsiveness between 30 °C and 5 °C, and can also measure cold adaptation. This protocol describes how to use the CPA to measure cold hypersensitivity, analgesia, and adaptation in mice.

A Method to Study Adaptation to Left-Right Reversed Audition

2018

The present study proposes a protocol to investigate the adaptation to left-right reversed audition achieved only by wearable devices, using neuroimaging, which can be an effective tool for uncovering the adaptability of humans to a novel environment in the auditory domain.
