Centrifugal Pump Bypass

Centrifugal pump bypass is a method of circulating blood through an extracorporeal circuit when the heart or lungs cannot provide sufficient flow, making it important in cardiac surgery and temporary life support. A rapidly rotating impeller transfers energy to the blood, creating pressure and forward flow; output varies with pump speed, venous filling, and circuit resistance rather than remaining fixed. The system can support cardiopulmonary bypass during surgery or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in critically ill patients, while reducing blood stasis and enabling precise control of circulation. Safe use requires monitoring flow, pressure, air, hemolysis, and circuit performance.

Working with Centrifuges

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Earth's gravitational force is capable of separating heterogeneous mixtures. However, many systems avert this type of separation owing to the length of time usually required in such cases. Centrifugation is one of the most powerful tools for the separation of heterogeneous mixtures1. It involves the application of centripetal force for sedimentation of the heavier phase, leading to separation of...

Surgical Swine Model of Chronic Cardiac Ischemia Treated by Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery

This protocol presents a surgical large animal model of chronic, single vessel ischemia that results in regional abnormalities but does not create infarct, known as hibernating myocardium. Following establishment of chronic ischemia, animals are treated with off-pump LIMA-LAD coronary artery bypass graft surgery to revascularize the ischemic tissue.
