Chronic Pancreatitis

Chronic pancreatitis is a long-term, progressive inflammation of the pancreas that causes irreversible structural damage and can impair digestion, blood-glucose regulation, and quality of life. Repeated pancreatic injury activates inflammatory pathways and pancreatic stellate cells, promoting fibrosis, ductal changes, and loss of exocrine and endocrine function; persistent damage may also produce chronic abdominal pain. In medicine, recognizing its causes, symptoms, and complications supports timely management with nutritional care, pancreatic enzyme replacement, pain treatment, diabetes monitoring, and, when necessary, endoscopic or surgical intervention. Studying chronic pancreatitis also helps clarify mechanisms of pancreatic failure and risks associated with disease progression.

Robotic-assisted Lateral Pancreaticojejunostomy for Chronic Pancreatitis

2025

This protocol presents a method for performing a parenchymal sparing robotic-assisted lateral pancreaticojejunostomy intended for appropriately selected patients with a pancreatic duct obstruction without significant inflammation of the pancreatic head. This article demonstrates critical aspects of the operation in a minimally invasive, robotic fashion to treat recurrent acute/chronic pancreatitis.

Chronic Pancreatitis I: Introduction

2025

The pancreas, an elongated and flat gland situated behind the stomach, serves a vital function in digesting food and managing blood sugar levels. Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas, which occurs when the immune system becomes active and causes swelling, pain, and disruptions in organ function. Pancreatitis can manifest as either an acute or chronic condition. Acute pancreatitis arises suddenly and lasts for a brief duration, while chronic pancreatitis is a long-term affliction...

Chronic pancreatitis is a long-standing, relapsing inflammation of the pancreas, characterized by irreversible damage to the gland. It results in progressive destruction of the pancreatic parenchyma, fibrosis, and eventual loss of both exocrine and endocrine function. The disease may evolve gradually after multiple episodes of acute pancreatitis or develop independently.EtiologyChronic pancreatitis can arise from a variety of causes:Alcohol use is the leading cause, accounting for 70–80% of...
