Chronic Respiratory Diseases

Chronic respiratory diseases are long-term disorders that affect the airways, lungs, or pulmonary circulation and can progressively limit breathing and quality of life. They arise through mechanisms such as persistent airway inflammation, structural remodeling, impaired gas exchange, or destruction of lung tissue, often producing symptoms including cough, wheezing, breathlessness, and reduced exercise capacity. Major examples include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung diseases, and pulmonary hypertension, each requiring condition-specific evaluation and management. Studying these diseases supports earlier diagnosis, individualized treatment, prevention of exacerbations, and development of therapies that preserve lung function and reduce respiratory disability.
