Cognitive Impairment

Cognitive impairment is a decline in mental abilities such as memory, attention, language, reasoning, or executive function that interferes with everyday activities to varying degrees. It can arise when disease, injury, aging-related changes, or metabolic and psychiatric conditions disrupt brain cells, neural networks, or communication between brain regions; the pattern and severity of deficits depend on the underlying cause. In medicine, cognitive assessment helps characterize these changes, distinguish temporary or reversible problems from progressive disorders, and guide diagnosis and care planning. Studying cognitive impairment also supports research on prevention, rehabilitation, treatments, and quality-of-life outcomes for patients and caregivers.

Cognitive Dissonance

2020

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

An Introduction to Cognition

2023

Cognition encompasses mental processes such as memory, perception, decision-making reasoning and language. Cognitive scientists are using a combination of behavioral and neuropsychological techniques to investigate the underlying neural substrates of cognition. They are interested in understanding how information is perceived, processed and how does it affect the final execution of behaviors. With this knowledge, researchers hope to develop new treatments for individuals with cognitive...
