Endoscopic Scoring

Endoscopic scoring is a standardized method for translating visual findings from an endoscopic examination into numerical or categorical measures of disease presence, severity, or activity. During the procedure, clinicians assess predefined features such as mucosal changes, lesions, narrowing, bleeding, or tissue healing and assign scores according to an established scale, improving consistency between observers and across examinations. In medicine, these scores support diagnosis, disease classification, treatment selection, and monitoring over time. They also provide measurable outcomes for clinical research, helping investigators compare therapies and evaluate whether structural abnormalities improve, persist, or worsen.

We describe methods for longitudinal monitoring of the efficacy of therapeutics for the treatment of colonic pathologies in mice using a rigid endoscope. This protocol can be readily used for the characterization of the therapeutic response of an individual tumor in live mice and also for monitoring potential disease relapse.

Introduction to z Scores

2023

A z score (or standardized value) is measured in units of the standard deviation. It tells you how many standard deviations the value x is above (to the right of) or below (to the left of) the mean, μ. Values of x that are larger than the mean have positive z scores, and values of x that are smaller than the mean have negative z scores. If x equals the mean, then x has a zero z score. It is important to note that the mean of the z scores is zero, and the standard deviation is one. z scores help...

Exp.(2023)This video demonstrates a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure to treat lumbar disc herniation by removing the protruded nucleus pulposus and ruptured annulus fibrosus. The technique decompresses the affected nerve root, alleviates pain, and restores nerve function through targeted tissue resection and radiofrequency modulation.
