Fertility-sparing Surgery

Fertility-sparing surgery is a medical approach that treats disease while preserving a person’s potential to conceive and carry a pregnancy, when clinically safe. It works by removing or treating abnormal tissue while conserving reproductive organs or their function, such as retaining the uterus, preserving ovarian tissue, or limiting removal to an affected region; decisions depend on disease extent, treatment goals, and reproductive plans. In oncology and gynecology, these procedures can support future family building while maintaining effective disease management, but they require careful selection, counseling, and follow-up to assess recurrence risk, hormonal function, and fertility outcomes.

Spare Receptors

Some receptors remain unoccupied even when an agonist produces a maximal response. Such empty ones are called spare receptors. In presence of spare receptors the maximum effect of an agonist drug is achieved with fewer than 100% of the receptors being occupied. To determine the presence of spare receptors, scientists often compare the concentration of the drug needed to produce 50% of the maximum effect (EC50) with the concentration of the drug needed to occupy 50% of the receptors (Kd). If the...

The Spared Nerve Injury (SNI) Model of Induced Mechanical Allodynia in Mice

The Spared Nerve Injury animal model is described here as a mouse model of peripheral neuropathic pain following partial denervation of the sciatic nerve by lesioning the tibial and common peroneal nerve branches, leaving the remaining sural nerve intact. Behavioral modification resulting from mechanical allodynia is quantified by von Frey filaments.

Fertilization

During fertilization, an egg and sperm cell fuse to create a new diploid structure. In humans, the process occurs once the egg has been released from the ovary, and travels into the fallopian tubes. The process requires several key steps: 1) sperm present in the genital tract must locate the egg; 2) once there, sperm need to release enzymes to help them burrow through the protective zona pellucida of the egg; and 3) the membranes of a single sperm cell and egg must fuse, with the sperm...
