Fluid Distribution

Fluid distribution is the movement and partitioning of water and dissolved substances among the body’s fluid compartments, including blood plasma, interstitial fluid, and intracellular fluid. It is governed by osmosis, hydrostatic and oncotic pressure, membrane permeability, and circulation: electrolytes and proteins influence water movement across cell membranes and capillary walls, while the kidneys help regulate volume and composition. Understanding these processes guides intravenous fluid selection, assessment of dehydration and edema, and interpretation of changes in blood volume and tissue perfusion. In medicine, fluid distribution also supports safer drug dosing and helps explain how disease, injury, or treatment disrupts homeostasis.

F Distribution

2023

The F distribution was named after Sir Ronald Fisher, an English statistician. The F statistic is a ratio (a fraction) with two sets of degrees of freedom; one for the numerator and one for the denominator. The F distribution is derived from the Student's t distribution. The values of the F distribution are squares of the corresponding values of the t distribution. One-Way ANOVA expands the t test for comparing more than two groups. The scope of that derivation is beyond the level of this...

Drug Distribution: Volume of Distribution

2023

The volume of distribution refers to the theoretical volume necessary to contain the entire amount of an administered drug at the same concentration observed in the blood plasma. The body's intracellular fluid compartment, which makes up two-thirds of the total body water, is contrasted with the extracellular fluid compartment—comprising plasma and interstitial fluid—that accounts for one-third. The volume of distribution can vary depending on the characteristics of the drug.

Species Distribution and Biogeography - Concepts

Species Distribution Biogeography is the study of species distribution across geographic space and the processes that shape these distributions. This discipline is based on the assumption that each species within a location must have immigrated from another geographic area or evolved from a local species. Within each habitat, a variety of biotic and abiotic factors act on individual species to shape birth, death, immigration, and emigration rates. To avoid local extinction, the combined birth...

Spatial Measurement of Tumor Interstitial Fluid Pressure: A Method to Measure the Interstitial Fluid Pressure

2023

This video describes a technique of measuring the interstitial fluid pressure within a tumor by perfusion imaging using an image-guided robotic system. Measurements are compared to the intra-tumoral accumulation of liposomes, within a solid tumor.
