Formalin Processing

Formalin processing is the preparation of biological tissue for microscopic examination, preserving cellular architecture so pathologists can evaluate disease. Tissue is fixed in formalin, which cross-links proteins and stabilizes structures, then passed through dehydration, clearing, and paraffin infiltration before embedding into a solid block for thin-sectioning and staining. In medicine, this workflow supports histopathology, tumor classification, assessment of inflammation, and evaluation of surgical margins. Consistent processing helps produce well-preserved sections and reliable diagnostic findings, while also providing material for selected immunohistochemical and molecular tests.

Fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) is often required in combination with histopathology and molecular diagnostics for selection of therapy in personalized medicine. A novel non-cross-linking, formalin-free tissue fixative that allows high quality morphologic, molecular and FISH analyses from the same specimen by addition of a post-fixation step before FISH is presented.
