Leaflet Grasping

Leaflet grasping is a procedural technique that captures and holds a heart valve leaflet to enable repair or repositioning, particularly during catheter-based treatment of valvular disease. In transcatheter edge-to-edge repair, a device is aligned with the valve, advances beneath the leaflets, and secures their tissue so the edges can be joined, reducing the opening through which blood regurgitates. The technique requires precise imaging guidance and controlled device manipulation to achieve stable leaflet capture without impairing valve motion. Successful grasping can improve coaptation, reduce regurgitation, and provide a less invasive treatment option for selected patients with mitral or tricuspid valve disease.

2013

There has been renewed interest in developing polymer valves. Here, the objectives are to demonstrate the feasibility of modifying a commercial pulse duplicator to accommodate tri-leaflet geometries and to define a protocol to present polymer valve hydrodynamic data in comparison to native and prosthetic valve data collected under near-identical conditions.

Estimation of Contact Regions Between Hands and Objects During Human Multi-Digit Grasping

When we grasp an object, multiple regions of the fingers and hand typically make contact with the object's surface. Reconstructing such contact regions is challenging. Here, we present a method for approximately estimating the contact regions by combining marker-based motion capture with existing deep learning-based hand mesh reconstruction.

Frame-by-Frame Video Analysis of Idiosyncratic Reach-to-Grasp Movements in Humans

This protocol describes how to use frame-by-frame video analysis to quantify idiosyncratic reach-to-grasp movements in humans. A comparative analysis of reaching in sighted versus unsighted healthy adults is used to demonstrate the technique, but the method can also be applied to the study of developmental and clinical populations.

Combining 3D-Printing and Electrospinning to Manufacture Biomimetic Heart Valve Leaflets

2022

The presented method offers an innovative way for engineering biomimetic fiber structures in three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds (e.g., heart valve leaflets). 3D-printed, conductive geometries were used to determine shape and dimensions. Fiber orientation and characteristics were individually adjustable for each layer. Multiple samples could be manufactured in one setup.

Layer Microdissection of Tricuspid Valve Leaflets for Biaxial Mechanical Characterization and Microstructural Quantification

2022

This protocol describes the biaxial mechanical characterization, polarized spatial frequency domain imaging-based collagen quantification, and microdissection of tricuspid valve leaflets. The provided method elucidates how the leaflet layers contribute to the holistic leaflet behaviors.
