Muscle Segmentation

Muscle segmentation is the process of identifying and outlining individual muscles or muscle compartments in medical images, making their anatomy measurable for clinical assessment and research. In imaging studies, segmentation uses anatomical boundaries and differences in signal or intensity, such as those visible in magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography, to assign muscle pixels or voxels to defined regions; this may be performed manually or with computer-assisted algorithms. The resulting contours support measurements of muscle volume, cross-sectional area, and composition, helping researchers evaluate atrophy, injury, neuromuscular disease, and treatment response. Reliable segmentation also enables more consistent quantitative analysis and may strengthen image-based diagnosis and longitudinal monitoring.

Mechanically Injuring Drosophila Larvae Segmental Nerves to Induce Neurodegeneration

2025

The video demonstrates inducing neurodegeneration in Drosophila larva segmental nerves via mechanical injury. The ventral cuticle of anesthetized larvae is pinched using forceps to cause injury to the segmental nerves. The injured larvae are maintained with food, allowing the injury to cause degeneration of the motor neurons in the nerves, causing disruption of their neuromuscular junctions (NMJs).

Anterior Eye Segment Dissection: A Method to Isolate Cornea Bearing Anterior Segment from Porcine Eye

Segmentation of three-dimensional data from many imaging techniques is a major bottleneck in analysis of complex biological systems. Here, we describe the use of SuRVoS Workbench to semi-automatically segment volumetric data at various length-scales using example datasets from cryo-electron tomography, cryo soft X-ray tomography, and phase contrast X-ray tomography techniques.

We describe a method to directly measure muscle force, muscle power, contractile kinetics and fatigability of isolated skeletal muscles in an in vitro system using field stimulation. Valuable information on Ca2+ handling properties and contractile machinery of the muscle can be obtained using different stimulating protocols.
