Pv-loop Catheter

A PV-loop catheter is a specialized cardiovascular instrument that measures pressure and volume within a cardiac chamber, allowing clinicians and researchers to assess ventricular function beyond conventional blood-pressure measurements. Introduced through a blood vessel, the catheter uses a pressure transducer and electrical conductance electrodes to record chamber pressure and estimate instantaneous blood volume throughout the cardiac cycle, generating pressure-volume loops. These loops reveal contractility, preload, afterload, stroke work, and ventricular-arterial coupling. In medicine, PV-loop analysis supports research on heart failure, cardiac mechanics, hemodynamic effects of drugs or devices, and treatment strategies that alter ventricular performance.

Cardiac pressure-volume loop analysis is the most comprehensive way to measure cardiac function in the intact heart. We describe a technique to perform and analyze cardiac pressure volume loops, using conductance catheters.

Catheterization of Intestinal Loops in Ruminants

We describe a novel surgical method for catheterizing 'intestinal loops' within the ileum of sheep. Once animals have recovered from surgery and have cleared antibiotics and analgesics, multiple treatments can be deposited directly in loops via the catheters.

pV-Diagrams

The pV diagram, which is a graph of pressure versus volume of the gas under study, is helpful in describing certain aspects of the substance. When the substance behaves like an ideal gas, the ideal gas equation describes the relationship between its pressure and volume. On a pV diagram, it is common to plot an isotherm, which is a curve showing p as a function of V with the number of molecules and the temperature fixed. Then, for an ideal gas, the product of the pressure of the gas and its...

Peripheral Intravenous Catheter Insertion

Source: Madeline Lassche, MSNEd, RN and Katie Baraki, MSN, RN, College of Nursing, University of Utah, UT The purpose of peripheral intravenous catheter (PIV) insertion is to infuse medications, perform intravenous (IV) fluid therapy, or inject radioactive tracers for special examination procedures. Placing a PIV is an invasive procedure and requires the use of an aseptic, no-touch technique. Common IV venipuncture sites are the arms and hands in adults and the feet in children. According to...
