Static Visual Acuity

Static visual acuity is the ability to distinguish fine detail when the eyes and visual target remain stationary, making it a basic measure of visual function in medicine. Clinicians assess it by presenting standardized optotypes, such as letters or symbols, at a fixed distance and recording the smallest targets a person can correctly identify, often under controlled lighting and with or without corrective lenses. Results are commonly expressed as a visual acuity ratio or logarithmic score and help detect refractive error, amblyopia, cataracts, retinal disease, and other disorders affecting the visual pathway. Serial measurements also monitor treatment outcomes and changes in vision over time.
