Urethral Stricture Surgery

Urethral stricture surgery is a group of procedures that treats scar-related narrowing of the urethra, helping restore the passage of urine and prevent complications from impaired drainage. Depending on the stricture’s location, length, and recurrence, surgeons may widen the channel through dilation or endoscopic incision, remove the scarred segment, or reconstruct the urethra with urethroplasty using nearby tissue or a graft. These approaches support individualized management of obstructive urinary symptoms and can improve urinary flow, although recurrence remains an important consideration. Understanding surgical techniques and healing responses helps guide treatment selection and outcomes in urologic medicine.

In the present protocol, a urethral stricture induction was developed in Wistar rats, followed by urethral reconstruction with a buccal mucosa graft. A retrograde urethrogram and laser Doppler assessment were performed, validating urethral reconstruction (after stricture formation) and graft placement.

Esophageal strictures involve abnormal narrowing or tightening of the esophagus. They vary in length and severity, ranging from mild constriction to complete obstruction, and are classified as benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Etiology The primary cause of esophageal strictures is long-standing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), accounting for about 70 to 80% of adult cases. Chronic acid reflux can lead to injury and scarring of the esophageal lining, culminating in...

Traditional modeling of partial bladder outlet obstruction in rodents is fraught with animal mortality. A denervation injury from dissection around the proximal urethra and bladder neck is also of major concern. We developed and evaluated a safe and reliable mid-urethral obstruction model, avoiding the shortcomings of the traditional model.
