Animal Communication Studies

Animal communication studies examine how animals produce, transmit, receive, and respond to signals, revealing how information shapes behavior and survival. Signals such as vocalizations, visual displays, chemical cues, and tactile contact are detected by sensory systems and processed through neural circuits that link perception to behavioral responses. In neuroscience, researchers compare communication pathways across species to investigate sensory coding, social behavior, learning, memory, and decision-making. These studies help explain how nervous systems interpret biologically meaningful information and can clarify the evolution of communication, social coordination, and disorders affecting communication-related neural processes.

Communication

2019

Communication between two animals occurs when one animal transmits an information signal that causes a change in the animal that receives the information. Organisms communicate with one another in a host of different ways. Signals can be auditory, chemical, visual, tactile, or a combination of these. Communication is a critical behavioral adaptation that promotes survival, growth, and reproduction. Types of Communication A common form of communication is visual. Visual communication can be...

Communication

2023

Sharing information, concepts, and emotions to foster mutual understanding is communication. The sender, recipient, and transaction must be considered in this manner. The sender is the person who shares the message, the recipient is the person who receives and understands the message, and the transaction is the method used to deliver the message and the variables that affect the communication's context and surroundings. The nurse-client connection is built on therapeutic communication. Within...

Recording Mouse Ultrasonic Vocalizations to Evaluate Social Communication

2016

Mouse ultrasonic vocalizations are used as proxies to model the genetic bases of vocal communication deficits in mouse models for neuropsychiatric disorders. The present protocol describes three experimental contexts that reliably elicit ultrasonic vocalizations from pups (throughout development) and adult mice (same-sex interactions, male-estrus female interactions).
