Cellular Assays

Cellular assays are laboratory tests that measure the properties, activity, or responses of cells, providing controlled evidence about biological function and disease. In neuroscience, researchers expose cultured neurons, glial cells, or neural models to defined stimuli or treatments, then quantify outcomes such as viability, morphology, electrical activity, or intracellular signaling using imaging, biochemical measurements, or electrophysiology. These assays can reveal how genetic, chemical, or environmental conditions affect neuronal communication and survival while enabling comparisons across experimental groups. They support studies of neural mechanisms, disease modeling, toxicity testing, and therapeutic screening, although results depend on model choice and assay conditions.

Pyruvate Assay for Estimation of Pyruvate Levels in Cellular Fractions of Worms

2025

This video describes a colorimetric assay for quantitatively measuring pyruvate in the cellular fractions of Caenorhabditis elegans. Utilizing the hydrogen peroxide produced from the enzymatic reaction of pyruvate oxidase with cellular pyruvate, a chromogenic dye is oxidized to produce a colored product, measured using colorimetry to determine the pyruvate concentration.

An In Vitro Assay to Measure Antibody-Dependent Cellular Phagocytosis by Phagocytes

2025

This video demonstrates an assay to measure the antibody-dependent cellular phagocytosis (ADCP) by breast milk phagocytes. Fluorescently labeled microspheres conjugated to an antigen-antibody complex, are combined with a cell suspension isolated from breast milk to induce antibody-dependent cellular phagocytosis by the phagocytic leukocytes. Upon labeling the cells with antibodies against common leukocyte antigen (CD45), flow cytometry is used to measure the fluorescence intensity of...

A Cellular Assay for the Identification of CXCR4-Interacting Agents

2025

This video illustrates a cellular assay involving glioblastoma cells expressing CXCR4 chemokine receptors. The assay employs a calcium-sensitive dye to measure fluorescence changes upon agent interaction, offering insights into cellular signaling dynamics.

Sulforhodamine B Assay: A Sensitive Assay to Measure Drug Resistance Via Determination of Cellular Protein Content in Cancer Cells

2023

This video describes the high throughput colorimetric screening assay, sulforhodamine B assay, to measure drug-induced cytotoxicity in cancer cells. The assay determines the drug resistance by measuring the cell density based on the cellular protein content.

Radiolabeled Amino Acid Uptake Assay to Quantify Cellular Uptake of Amino Acids

2025

This video demonstrates an in vitro technique for estimating amino acid uptake by bone marrow-derived stromal cells. Na+-dependent amino acid transporters mediate the uptake of radiolabeled amino acids inside the cells, and the cellular uptake is estimated by measuring the radioactivity.
