Colorimetric Feeding Assay

A Colorimetric Feeding Assay is a quantitative method for measuring food intake by converting ingestion into a detectable color signal. It typically uses a colored tracer or dye-labeled food; after feeding, the dye retained in an organism or sample is extracted or measured by absorbance, with signal intensity reflecting the amount consumed. In neuroscience, this approach helps characterize feeding behavior, satiety, appetite, and neural regulation in experimental models while reducing reliance on visual scoring alone. By providing a reproducible readout of ingestion, it supports studies of neural circuits, genetic factors, and compounds that alter feeding or energy balance.

Colorimetric Assay for Quantification of Lactate in Test Samples

2025

This video describes a colorimetric assay for lactate measurement in cell lysates by using the lactate dehydrogenase enzyme. This enzyme converts lactate into pyruvate, along with the conversion of NAD to NADH that reacts with tetrazolium dyes and gives a colored product that can be measured spectrophotometrically to quantitate the lactate.

Behavioral assays provide powerful tools for understanding neuronal function. Here we present several protocols for quantifying predatory feeding behavior found in the model nematode Pristionchus pacificus and its relatives. Additionally, we provide methods for analyzing predatory feeding adaptations including mouth structures and teeth.

High Fat Diet Feeding and High Throughput Triacylglyceride Assay in Drosophila Melanogaster

This is a high fat diet feeding protocol to induce obesity in Drosophila, a model for understanding fundamental molecular mechanisms implicated in lipotoxicity. It also provides a high throughput triacylglyceride assay for measuring fat accumulation in Drosophila and potentially other (insect) models under various dietary, environmental, genetic or physiological conditions.

Feeding Test: Assessment of Feeding Preferences in Drosophila melanogaster

This video describes a feeding assay for fruit flies in which colored food is used to monitor feeding and the effect added compounds may have on feeding activity. The example protocol tests the effects of several endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC).

Taste Preference Assay: A Method for Measuring Feeding Behavior in Drosophila

2023

This video describes the taste preference assay, a behavioral method used to measure attraction or avoidance towards colored solutions that taste differently by assessing the fly's abdominal coloration after ingestion of the preferred substance. The featured protocol demonstrates the procedure used to measure flies' preference towards solutions of varying sucrose concentrations.
