Gender Pairing

Gender pairing in neuroscience refers to organizing research participants or experimental subjects into same-gender or mixed-gender pairs to examine how sex-related biology, gender identity, or social context may influence brain function and behavior. In practice, researchers define pairing criteria, match or compare individuals across relevant characteristics, and analyze outcomes while controlling for factors such as age, hormonal state, and experimental conditions. This approach can support studies of social interaction, communication, cooperation, and neural responses to partners, while helping investigators identify effects that may be overlooked when gender is treated as a single, uniform variable. Clear terminology and transparent grouping improve the interpretability and reproducibility of neuroscience research.

2011

A straight-forward set of methods to isolate and determine the identity of the most abundant proteins expressed in skeletal muscle. About 800 spots are discerned on a two-dimensional gel from 10 mg muscle; this allows for the determination of gender-specific protein expression. These methods will give equivalent results in most tissues.

Socioemotional Experience and Gender Development

2025

Social-emotional experiences and cultural influences play significant roles in shaping gender development. During middle childhood, from ages 6 to 11, peer groups become dominant in reinforcing gender norms. Children in this age group often align with same-gender peer groups, which actively encourage behaviors that conform to traditional gender roles. For instance, boys may be discouraged from engaging in activities perceived as feminine, reinforcing culturally dictated norms about masculinity...

The protocol describes the development of two rodent models mimicking gender-affirming hormone therapies through subcutaneous administration of testosterone or estradiol plus cyproterone acetate (used in human therapies for transgender people): setting of the doses, identification of relevant biomarkers, and evaluation of the effects.

DNA Base Pairing

Erwin Chargaff’s rules on DNA equivalence paved the way for the discovery of base pairing in DNA. Chargaff’s rules state that in a double-stranded DNA molecule, the amount of adenine (A) is equal to the amount of thymine (T); the amount of guanine (G) is equal to the amount of cytosine (C); and the sum of purines, A and G, is equal to the sum of pyrimidines, C and T (i.e., A+G = C+T). Later work by Watson and Crick revealed that in double-stranded DNA, A always forms two hydrogen bonds...

Parental Influences on Gender Typing

Parents shape children’s understanding of gender through “gender-typing,” the process of learning culturally appropriate behaviors, interests, and roles for boys and girls.Reinforcement of Gender NormsFrom infancy, parents may communicate gender expectations through speech, play, praise, and behavior. Fathers may praise boys for bravery or assertiveness while responding more sensitively to girls. Gendered descriptions in books, divisions of household labor, and parental hobbies can also...
