Hierarchical Mixed Model

Hierarchical mixed models are statistical frameworks that analyze data with multiple levels of variation, combining population-level effects with group- or subject-specific effects. They represent nested or repeated observations through fixed effects, which estimate shared relationships, and random effects, which capture differences among participants, brain regions, sessions, or other clusters; this structure accounts for correlations within groups rather than treating observations as independent. In neuroscience, hierarchical mixed models can evaluate neural and behavioral measures across individuals and experimental conditions while accommodating unequal numbers of observations and missing data under appropriate assumptions. Their multilevel estimates improve inference about population patterns and individual variability in imaging, electrophysiology, and cognitive experiments.

Synthesis of Hierarchical ZnO/CdSSe Heterostructure Nanotrees

2016

Here, we prepare and characterize novel tree-like hierarchical ZnO/CdSSe nanostructures, where CdSSe branches are grown on vertically aligned ZnO nanowires. The resulting nanotrees are a potential material for solar energy conversion and other opto-electronic devices.

Hierarchical and Programmable One-Pot Oligosaccharide Synthesis

Mixed Strategies

2025

In game theory, mixed strategies involve players choosing their actions randomly from a set of available options. This approach contrasts with pure strategies, where players select a specific action with certainty. Mixed strategies become relevant in scenarios where there is no pure strategy equilibrium. A mixed-strategies Nash equilibrium occurs when players adopt strategies so that no one can benefit by unilaterally changing their own strategy, given the strategies of the others. In this...

Aggregates for Concrete and Asphaltic Mixes

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Concrete and asphalt are by far the most common construction materials used today. Concrete is a composite material consisting of cement, water, air, coarse aggregate, and fine aggregates. Fine aggregates are typically sands and coarse aggregates are natural or crushed rocks. Chemical admixtures to modify certain specific properties are also commonly used (i.e., superplasticizers to make the...

The Thermodynamics of Mixing

2026

Mixing is a fascinating phenomenon in thermodynamics, particularly when considering the Gibbs energy of a mixture at constant temperature and pressure. This energy, denoted as G, tends to decrease during spontaneous mixing processes, offering insights into the composition changes that occur.Imagine two ideal gases, initially separated in different containers, with amounts nA and nB, respectively, both at a temperature T and pressure p. The chemical potentials of these gases have their 'pure'...
