Mouse Head Alignment

Mouse head alignment is the precise positioning of a mouse’s skull and brain within a defined anatomical reference frame, a foundational step for reproducible neuroscience experiments. In a stereotaxic or head-fixation apparatus, the skull is secured while landmarks such as bregma and lambda are used to level the head and establish consistent anterior-posterior, medial-lateral, and dorsal-ventral coordinates. Accurate alignment improves the reliability of injections, electrode placement, optical recordings, and behavioral imaging by reducing variation between animals. It also supports consistent targeting of brain regions and strengthens comparisons across experiments, making it essential for circuit mapping, neural manipulation, and quantitative analysis.

2025

Source: Yang, Z., et.al. A Repetitive Concussive Head Injury Model in Mice. J. Vis. Exp. (2016).This video demonstrates the induction of repetitive concussive head injuries in a mouse using an electromagnetic impact device. The procedure involves positioning the impact tip between the interfrontal and lambdoid sutures on the skull of an anesthetized mouse and using a probe tip to precisely set the impact depth. The impact is delivered at a controlled velocity and depth to simulate mild...

Mouse Headpost Implantation: A Method for Head Fixation in Rodents

The analytical ultracentrifuge (AUC) sample cell holds sample and reference buffer and during experiments and is exposed to high vacuum and rotor speeds up to 60,000 rpm. This video will demonstrate the rigorous attention to detail necessary for assembly, loading and alignment of this very important component of an AUC experiment.

Design Example: Alignment of a Road Line Using GIS

2025

The alignment of a road line using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a critical process in civil engineering, combining advanced technology with practical decision-making. This methodology begins with the collection of geospatial data, including information on land cover, geomorphology, drainage patterns, slope, and contour details. Such data is typically acquired through satellite imagery and GIS tools, offering a comprehensive understanding of the terrain.Once the data is gathered, it...

Generating a Closed-Head Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in a Murine Model

Source: Logsdon, A. F., et al. Low-intensity Blast Wave Model for Preclinical Assessment of Closed-head Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Rodents. J. Vis. Exp. (2020)This video demonstrates the induction of closed-head mild traumatic brain injury in a mouse model using a pressurized gas shock tube setup. The generated pressure wave ruptures the polyester membrane, delivering a shockwave to the mouse’s head that results in rapid brain movement within the skull, causing a mild traumatic brain injury.
